Animal by-products (LAPs) like feathers and bones are excellent sources of valuable nutrients. However, these can’t be consumed directly by humans but are ideal for the nutritional needs of many aquaculture species. By using them in aquafeeds we can return these valuable nutrients to our food system.
Historically, there have been concerns about the quality of LAPs in some markets. However, technological advancements and stricter controls over the past decade have transformed LAPs into a reliable, low-impact ingredient. Changing our mindset on waste is crucial for a sustainable food system, and safe reintroduction of resources like LAPs through seafood should be embraced.
Circular Products Made Better
As the aquaculture sector grows, a resilient supply of raw materials is essential. In BioMar we collaborate with responsible suppliers who prioritize sustainability. One such partnership is with Kaura Coproducts, a Spanish company specializing in the efficient use of animal by-products. Since 2022, Kaura has been working with BioMar, starting in the South American market, to process by-products safely and return valuable nutrients to the food system.
Kaura's innovative process ensures that by-products destined for landfills are captured and repurposed as nutrient-rich aquafeeds. This approach benefits businesses, society, and the environment, demonstrating a positive circular use of resources.
Kaura is dedicated to improving its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. They are working towards full traceability of greenhouse gas emissions from origin to end and seeking efficiency savings through energy and water recovery systems. Kaura's commitment is evidenced by their certification to the Forética SGE 21 Standard for ethical and socially responsible management.
Kaura exemplifies a partner aligned with our mission to reduce the carbon footprint and achieve more circular resource use in aquafeeds.
